American Physical Therapy Association: A Defining Moment

Updated: Feb 16, 2020

My idea for GroupHab, the unique model of physical therapy wellness care for individuals managing chronic conditions, has been formulating for many years. I have been frustrated professionally with the all too common scenario – I am excited about patients’ progress with physical therapy treatment, they are discharged with a home exercise program and recommendations to community resources, only to return to PT in a few months with another referral for physical therapy because they have not been exercising at home. Professionally, I knew PT’s could think outside of the box, using our extensive PT knowledge, theory and experience combined with access to the most current research to develop and implement meaningful solutions to keep our patients healthy and well.

I have always had a passion for teaching group exercise classes, teaching all types of classes in several different health and wellness centers since my undergraduate years (a long time ago). I combined this group exercise experience and my knowledge of PT to develop the GroupHab classes for seniors managing chronic conditions.

I am so excited and fortunate to have been contacted by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to have been featured in their magazine, PT in Motion. To receive recognition from your peers is the highest compliment. I have known for a long time how special and unique GroupHab’s mission and vision are, but to have GroupHab recognized and supported by the APTA is tremendous! My hope and vision is that over the next few months and years, PTs across the nation will offer group exercise classes for wellness and prevention- that this model of a system of care would be common practice- really and truly making a momentous difference in patients’ lives!

Seeing the improvements that so many clients have made has been the most rewarding and encouraging aspect of creating GroupHab.
